University Exam Preparation

SAT Critical Reading and Writing- The purpose of this course is to help students implement effective strategies and practices that have proven beneficial in improving student response and performances for the language arts portion of college entry exams. We focus on overcoming the difficult challenges the English language presents for all those wishing to attend American universities and on presenting strategies and insights for avoiding the traps and pitfalls inherent in standardized testing.

AP English Language and Composition- The purpose of this course is to afford students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to perform college level work and prepare them for the AP exam. Through successful completion of the exam, high school students can acquire college credit, giving them a head start and an advantage as they prepare for their university careers. Before attending this course, students must be confident in their ability to analyze linguistic and rhetorical choices and show an awareness of literary styles that result from word selection and syntactic purpose. Students must possess a requisite knowledge of grammar and be proficient in verbal analysis.

AP Literature and Composition- The purpose of this course is to provide students the opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understandings of English literature, literary terminology and concepts, as well as the conventions of written composition. The objective of the course is to prepare students for the AP exam through which advanced college credit can be received. Before signing up for the course, students should have a sound foundation in literary analysis, an extensive reading history, an academic lexicon, and proficient skill in writing.

TOEFL Prep- The purpose of this course is to prepare foreign language students for the TOEFL exams, leading to U.S. college and university admittance. The exam measures a student’s English language proficiency in all four linguistic domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as his awareness of correct sentence structure. Intimate knowledge of the test format and structure along with proven problem solving insights and strategies prepare the student for successful exam completion and higher academic study.

High School Prep and Language/Cultural Immersion

Effective Essay Writing- The purpose of this course is to promote a sincere appreciation for the power of communication and to cultivate the linguistic potential of every student. The power of communication comes from the ability to convey thought well. Writers achieve this with words. Words have the capacity to inspire, to influence, to build bridges, and to open doors. Mastery of the written language is the key not only to academic success but also to endless possibilities. Every good writer knows that there is a vital and fundamental process that he can utilize to develop concepts and convey them clearly. This course will focus on the process and procedures that every student must know to achieve writing proficiency.  

Conversational English- There are literally thousands of common expressions that Americans use everyday in social interactions that the foreign student will not be exposed to in grammar class. These expressions include idioms, figures of speech, colloquialisms, jargon, and slang that foreign students need to know for social dialogue. Unfortunately, the grammatically correct but artificial speech that foreign students are exposed to do not prepare them for conversations on the streets, in grocery stores, at parties, or in between classes. The purpose of this class is to teach students how to engage in “small talk”, natural informal conversation that takes place on a daily basis and comprises the largest portion of their speech activity.

Oral Presentation/ Public Speaking- The purpose of this course is to advance the students’ ability to communicate in clear concise English for formal situations and academic discourse. The objective is achieved by gaining in-depth knowledge of the communication process through the ability to correctly analysis the occasion, to decide on the appropriate speech patterns, and to deliver the desired thoughts intelligibly and effectively. In addition, non-verbal messages that reinforce spoken language and facilitate understanding will be studied to better understand their role in clarifying meaning.
