ASG Students Celebrate Halloween With Scary Costumes

October 28th, 2016 | Featured

dsc_8150_retouchedHalloween may be largely associated with America, but that doesn’t mean other nations do not celebrate this frightful holiday. American Scholar Group (ASG) hosted the annual Halloween Party for staff and students on October 28th, 2016. The Banquet Hall, while usually used for a full range of formal occasions, was decked out in spooky decorations. Students came dressed in various costumes, from evil clowns and sumo wrestlers, to zombies, movie characters and more!

As always, the event included a costume contest. This year’s contest was conducted via a fashion show. Students took turns to parade their costumes before a panel of judges comprised of ASG staff and fellow students. The participants were judged according to effort, creativity, and presentation.

Jeovana Zhang won 1st place, Ezekiel Lim came in 2nd, and Celina Zhao took 3rd Place. Each winner took home cash prizes of $50, $30 and $20 respectively.

A number of student clubs also hosted exhibits and events at the costume party.

GHS Students Compete in Business Week Competition

October 21st, 2016 | Student Spotlight

Greenville High School students participated in their annual Business Week simulation from October 17th – 21st.

Throughout the week, GHS students learned about the basics of entrepreneurship including launching their own companies, designing a product and marketing it to potential ‘customers’.

This year, six teams participated in the week-long event, each with a different product of their own. Instead of going to regular classes, team members spent the week brainstorming product development and marketing together, all while making sure to keep all their plans hidden from competing teams before the big reveal.

ASG students Maria Matuszewska, Jancie Ye, Leo Li, Yvette Shao, Tony Tang, Leo Lee, Peter Zhang, Alex Zhu and Ander Wang competed on various teams.

Leo Li and Yvette Shao of Team HyperPixel took home top honors, winning the overall competition and 3 awards for Top Company, Advertising & Marketing Competition, Stock Holders Presentation.

Leo Lee Sukmin’s company, Capture Inc won the trade show category for their product, “Captum”, a small versatile camera-enhancing device named after the Latin word for “Capture.” The camera, which was designed to be scratchproof and waterproof, wasn’t limited to just smartphones. It could be added to any versatile object, such as a wall or a helmet.

“I think we won [the marketing award] because we had a good prototype and we treated our customers very nicely,” Sukmin said. “I learned a lot about finance, managing money, marketing, research and development. It was an awesome week and I made a whole bunch of new friends.”

Maria Matuszewska of Poland worked with her teammates to create a personal organizer in the form of a high-tech wallet. It sported a fingerprint sensor, modeled after the technology brought out and updated by Apple and Samsung on their newest generation of phones, and an application on smartphones in case it gets lost. “I was surprised we didn’t win, “Matuszewska said. “It was a lot of fun to just work with people, because everyone had a job in the group. It was more important to work as a group.”
