GHS Officially Recognized as ‘MIT FAB LAB’

October 16th, 2017 | School Spotlight

We are pleased to announce that Greenville High School (GHS) has been recognized as a prestigious MIT FAB LAB by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center of Bits and Atoms!

The special status is awarded to academic and commercial innovation hubs that help stimulate local entrepreneurship and invention in their communities. Selection criteria include having facilities and software that meet international standards and provide ease of collaboration across international borders.

GHS is now one of only 163 such recognized facilities in the United States, and one of 1,200 around the world, a glowing testament to its innovative hands-on STEM engineering course offerings and facilities!

At GHS’ Technology and Engineering suite, students are often engaged in creative projects that undergo many cycles of prototyping and innovation. The process demands that each student must have a deep understanding of the machines they interact with and be personally involved throughout the design process, from theory to production. Special academic offerings include an interdisciplinary engineering class team-taught by a physics teacher and an engineering teacher.

GHS Engineering & Technology facilities include:

  • 3 single extruding 3D printers and 1 industrial quality dual extruding 3D printer
  • 1 laser engraver
  • 3 digital design stations that include a 3D sculpting stylus and 3D scanner
  • Larger format 3 axis CNC high-speed mill/router – 4′ x 8′ ft work area
  • CNC Router
  • Small CNC Metal Lathel
  • Student access to industry standard software suites (Autodesk, Adobe, Corel, Vetrics products)
  • Instruction that follows the internationally recognized Engineering byDesign curriculum

FAB LAB Membership gives GHS students access to a global knowledge community of FAB LAB researchers, innovators, inventors and educators spanning 30 countries and 24 time zones. Congratulations, GHS!
