Luke Le to Attend YSU English Festival

April 27th, 2017 | Student Spotlight

Luke Le, 7th grader at St. Christine school in Youngstown, Ohio, has qualified to attend the Youngstown State University English Festival on Friday, April 28th.  This is a unique annual program reaching out to approximately 3,000 junior and senior high school students from Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties in Ohio, and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania, who are interested in promoting and cultivating reading and writing.  Luke had to read seven novels in English and pass the on-line Accelerated Reader test for each.  The competition was extremely difficult with only 25 students qualifying out of the 100 students who participated at St. Christine school.  Luke will spend the 28th on the campus of Youngstown State University; this will be a day filled with many interesting activities.  The students will listen to a noted author or authors of some of the books they have read, write impromptu essays, collaborate on workshop activities, attend dramatic or artistic performances, participate in “insight” book discussions, and try their skills at language games and “not-so-trivial pursuit” competitions.  Considering that English is Luke’s second language, it is a significant achievement and great honor for him to make it into the top 25 students.  Luke’s English Teacher, Ms. Tiffany Toman had some great words of praise for him.  “Luke is a pleasure to have at our school.  He is a bright, kind, young man who shows much potential. We are pleased that Luke will be participating in the English Festival at YSU. He has worked very hard in preparing for this day and is well-deserving of this privilege.  We look forward to having Luke back next year at our school.”  Congratulations Luke on these well-deserved words of praise and on the great achievement of attending the YSU English Festival!
