ASG Academic Advising: Expressing The 5 Factors – Student Organizations

Student organizations, which often take the form of clubs, fall directly within Extracurricular Activities in ASG’s Five Factors of U.S. University Admission. Joining such an organization, whether organized through school, ASG, or another sponsor, is a great way to explore old and new interests, make friends, and build your student resume.

Some student organizations also engage in community service once in a while or are wholly dedicated to service. Students can experience up to three of the 5 Factors by being actively engaged in just a single activity.

One highly successful example of this is the Vision Club, involving three friends at ASG with overlapping interests: film-making, graphic art and design, videography, and photography. Other students joined Vision Club as well, which put out monthly displays of their work according to different themes. They also made decorations for holiday events and created short films shown at ASG gatherings.

Music Club is another example. Many of our students are singers or play musical instruments, and those who joined Music Club would select songs to perform at ASG events and gatherings and rehearse together. From amazing vocals to rocking guitar chords, drum rhythms to piano melodies, Music Club delighted and entertained audiences while having fun performing their numbers.

Korean Society is the longest running club at ASG. Originally founded as an expression of cultural pride and solidarity, it welcomes people from all nationalities to its Korean BBQs and Karaoke Nights. Korean Society encourages its members and guests to be proud of their heritage (whatever it may be) even as they learn or adopt new perspectives during their time in America. Of course, like all ASG clubs, its primary outcomes are friends and good times.

Many members of these and other ASG clubs gained an advantage in their university applications from their participation and leadership in such groups, but also strong friendships and fond memories. The Five Factors are important, but they don’t exist in a vacuum.
