Greenville High School International Mentors Host After-School Team-Building Event for ASG Students

Greenville High School (GHS) international student mentors and GHS ASG students participated in a ‘lock-in’ program after school on Friday, January 20th.

A ‘lock-in’ is a local term used to describe a closed group activity designed to foster closer ties between participating members. In total, 13 ASG GHS international students, 21 local GHS students, and 4 GHS administrators including GHS guidance counselors, Mr. Ryan Wig and Ms. Kristin Richards, GHS principal Dr. Mark Hogue, and International Student Coordinator, Mr. Justin Lewis participated in the after-school event.

The lock-in began with a short round of introductions by all students before they were divided in teams of five for a photo scavenger hunt around the high school. Each team was given a list of 25 items that they had to identify and take a group picture with. The items ranged from the obvious (take pictures with three GHS school logos) to the subtle (find four diamonds in a row), requiring participants to work as a team and make use of their experiences and knowledge of the school to find all 25 items. After the photo scavenger hunt, the group had a pizza party and reflected on the activities of the day.  GHS senior Leo Lee said, “I enjoyed having conversation and playing games with the kids I didn’t know. It was fun hanging out with both the Greenville kids and ASG students and getting to know them all better.”

The event, hosted by GHS administration and teachers, is one of many upcoming initiatives designed to help ASG international students build relationships with local American students. Mr. Justin Lewis shared, “we were very happy with how everything went today. We hope to continue offering more programs like these to help our international students bridge the gap between the different cultures and give them the confidence to reach out to their teachers and peers.”
